Spheres of products

The distinction between the different product categories can be confusing. Here are some common examples:

Sunscreen only based on titanium dioxide is considered a natural health product, whereas if it is composed of avodenzone or octisalate, it is considered a drug.

A shampoo containing sulfur can be considered as an antidandruff product only if it has a natural health product license. Without the presence of recognized "antidandruff" ingredients, the shampoo is considered as a cosmetic.

Some products may be "hybrid" containing one or more ingredients of natural health and/or drug and/or food and/or cosmetics. This type of product may be covered by one or more Regulation(s) (including the Natural Health Products Regulations, the Food and Drug Regulations or Cosmetic Regulations) depending on the ingredients present in the product, use (primary use) and claims relating thereto.
